Chromatropes – Wonder Club 2025

A short animation piece inspired by chromatropes, a magic lantern slide device and one of the precursors of the moving image. The animation is built from geometric shapes overlaid on one another and set into a slow-rotating motion, creating abstract patterns and shifting forms. Created from a series of experiments conducted by participants of the Wonder Club programme, the images were later animated and reworked through analogue video processes. The result is a hypnotic loop in which still images are activated by motion and signal interference.

This work was created as part of Wonder Club, a creative programme of workshops for young people at Hove Museum of Creativity led by artist Chahine Fellahi, exploring early film through experimental approaches to photography, film, and image-making. The programme was part of Days of Wonder, a three-year programme exploring film and media heritage in Brighton, curated and produced by videoclub and Corridor Projects in partnership with Brighton & Hove Museums and Screen Archive South East.
